Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus (LCMV) is an arenavirus that naturally infects wild mice and can affect various pet rodent species including mice, hamsters, and guinea pigs. This virus holds particular significance as a zoonotic pathogen capable of causing serious illness in humans, especially pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals. The disease presents differently depending on when infection occurs during the animal's life, with congenitally infected animals often showing no symptoms while serving as persistent virus shedders.
The virus is endemic in wild mouse populations worldwide, with prevalence varying by geographic region and season. Pet rodents typically acquire infection through contact with wild mice or their excreta, contaminated bedding materials, or through vertical transmission from infected mothers to offspring. The virus has caused notable outbreaks traced to pet store rodents and laboratory animal colonies, highlighting the importance of sourcing animals from reputable breeders with appropriate health screening programs.
Clinical disease in pet rodents ranges from completely asymptomatic persistent infection to severe acute illness with neurological involvement. Animals infected in utero or during the neonatal period typically become immunotolerant carriers that shed virus throughout their lives without showing clinical signs. In contrast, immunocompetent adult animals infected later in life may develop acute illness characterized by lethargy, weight loss, and potentially neurological symptoms, though many infections remain subclinical.
Due to the zoonotic potential of LCMV, diagnosis and management carry implications beyond individual animal health. Pregnant women and immunosuppressed individuals face significant risks from LCMV exposure, including potential for severe neurological disease and congenital abnormalities in developing fetuses. Exotic veterinarians must balance animal welfare considerations with public health responsibilities when advising on LCMV cases, often recommending euthanasia for confirmed positive animals to eliminate ongoing transmission risk to human household members.
