Gingivitis is inflammation of the gingiva, the soft tissue commonly known as the gums that surrounds the base of the teeth and covers the underlying jaw bone. In small mammals, gingivitis represents an early stage of periodontal disease and serves as an important warning sign of developing oral health problems. The condition is characterized by redness, swelling, and increased sensitivity of the gum tissue, typically caused by accumulation of plaque and bacteria along the gum line. When identified and treated early, gingivitis is generally reversible, but if left untreated, it can progress to more serious periodontal disease affecting the deeper structures supporting the teeth.
Gingivitis can affect virtually any small mammal species, though it is most commonly recognized and diagnosed in species where dental disease is prevalent. Rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and degus with their continuously growing teeth are particularly susceptible when dental problems lead to abnormal food accumulation and bacterial growth. Hamsters, gerbils, rats, and mice can also develop gingivitis, often associated with dental issues, dietary factors, or systemic illness. The condition may occur at any age but becomes more common as animals age and dental issues accumulate. Because small mammals instinctively hide signs of illness, gingivitis is likely underdiagnosed in many pets.
The impact of gingivitis on small mammal health extends beyond local gum inflammation. Painful gums discourage normal eating, which is particularly concerning in small mammals with high metabolic rates that cannot tolerate prolonged periods of reduced food intake. In species requiring constant tooth wear from fibrous food, eating avoidance due to painful gums can accelerate dental overgrowth, creating a damaging cycle. Chronic inflammation provides an entry point for bacteria to access deeper tissues and the bloodstream. Research in other species links chronic oral inflammation to systemic health effects including heart and kidney problems, though this is less well studied in small mammals.
The good news is that gingivitis is treatable and often reversible when addressed promptly. Treatment involves addressing the underlying cause, professional dental cleaning when indicated, and supportive care to promote healing. Preventing gingivitis through appropriate diet, proper husbandry, and regular veterinary dental assessment is far preferable to treating established disease. Any small mammal showing signs of oral discomfort or changes in eating behavior should be evaluated by a veterinarian experienced in exotic animal medicine, as early intervention offers the best outcomes.
