This condition develops when humidity levels are insufficient for complete shedding, leaving rings of old skin wrapped tightly around the narrowest parts of the body. As the retained shed dries and contracts further, it acts as a tourniquet, progressively restricting blood flow until the affected tissue dies. This condition affects multiple reptile species but is particularly common in geckos, which have delicate toes highly susceptible to shed constriction. Leopard geckos, crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, and African fat-tailed geckos are frequently affected due to their slender digits and the popularity of keeping these species in conditions that may lack adequate humidity. Bearded dragons, chameleons, and other lizard species can also experience toe or tail necrosis from retained shed. Any reptile species that sheds its skin in pieces rather than one complete piece has potential vulnerability to this complication.
The impact of retained shed necrosis extends beyond the immediate tissue loss. The dying tissue can become a site of secondary infection as bacteria colonize the necrotic material, potentially spreading to viable tissue or systemically. The process of tissue death is painful and stressful for the reptile, affecting appetite, activity, and overall wellbeing. Permanent loss of toes affects mobility and climbing ability, particularly significant for arboreal species. Loss of tail portions affects balance, fat storage in species that use the tail for reserves, and may have social implications in species where tail condition indicates health status.
Toe and tail necrosis is almost entirely preventable through proper humidity management and regular monitoring of shed cycles. Every case represents a husbandry failure that could have been avoided through appropriate environmental conditions and keeper vigilance. Treatment is most successful when retained shed is identified and removed before circulation is significantly impaired, making regular inspection after each shed cycle essential. Once necrosis has developed, the damage is irreversible for affected tissue, emphasizing the critical importance of prevention and early intervention.
