Tail necrosis, commonly referred to as tail rot, is a serious condition affecting reptiles in which the tail tissue begins to die due to compromised blood circulation, bacterial infection, or traumatic injury. This progressive condition causes the affected portion of the tail to darken, shrivel, and eventually become non-viable tissue that may fall off or require surgical removal. Tail rot represents one of the more visually alarming conditions reptile keepers encounter, as the characteristic blackening of tail tissue is often impossible to miss once the condition has progressed beyond its earliest stages.
This condition affects a wide range of reptile species, though it is particularly common in lizards such as bearded dragons, leopard geckos, blue tongue skinks, iguanas, and monitor lizards. Any reptile with a tail can potentially develop tail necrosis, though species that are more prone to retained shed, those kept in suboptimal humidity conditions, and those housed in enclosures where tail injuries can occur face elevated risk. The prevalence of tail rot in captive reptiles speaks to the importance of proper husbandry, as the vast majority of cases can be traced back to environmental factors, handling injuries, or inadequate attention to shedding problems.
The impact of tail necrosis on reptile health extends beyond the obvious tissue loss. As the condition progresses, bacteria from the necrotic tissue can enter the bloodstream, potentially causing septicemia, a life-threatening systemic infection. The tail serves important functions in many reptile species, including balance, fat storage, and social signaling, meaning that significant tail loss can affect quality of life. Additionally, the stress of dealing with ongoing tissue death and potential infection places considerable strain on the reptile's immune system and overall health, particularly when temperature and husbandry conditions are not optimized to support healing.
When caught early, tail necrosis is often treatable through a combination of husbandry correction, topical treatments, and supportive care. However, advanced cases frequently require partial or complete tail amputation performed by a reptile-experienced veterinarian. The key to successful outcomes lies in early detection, prompt veterinary consultation, and addressing the underlying causes that allowed the condition to develop. Reptile keepers should perform regular visual inspections of their animals, paying particular attention to the tail tip and any areas where constriction from retained shed might occur.
