Scale rot, medically known as ventral dermatitis or blister disease, is a bacterial skin infection affecting the scales and underlying tissues of reptiles, most commonly occurring on the ventral (belly) surface where the animal contacts substrate and enclosure surfaces. This progressive condition develops when bacteria, typically gram-negative organisms naturally present in the reptile's environment, invade damaged or compromised skin under conditions that favor bacterial proliferation. Scale rot represents one of the most common and preventable health problems in captive reptiles, occurring almost exclusively as a direct consequence of inadequate husbandry.
The condition affects virtually all reptile species but is particularly prevalent in those kept on inappropriate substrates or in enclosures with excessive moisture and inadequate sanitation. Snakes are frequently affected due to their extensive ventral contact with substrate, while terrestrial lizards, aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles, and tortoises also commonly develop this condition when environmental conditions deteriorate. The prevalence of scale rot in captive populations reflects widespread deficiencies in basic reptile husbandry knowledge, making education a critical component of prevention.
Scale rot significantly impacts reptile health through multiple mechanisms beyond the visible skin damage. The bacterial infection can spread from superficial involvement to deeper tissues, potentially reaching muscle and bone in severe cases. Systemic infection may develop as bacteria enter the bloodstream, progressing to life-threatening septicemia. Even localized infections create chronic stress that suppresses immune function, making affected reptiles more susceptible to secondary health problems. The pain and discomfort associated with scale rot can cause behavioral changes including anorexia, reduced activity, and abnormal posturing.
With appropriate treatment combining aggressive husbandry correction, wound care, and medical therapy when indicated, scale rot is generally treatable, particularly when identified early. However, advanced cases involving deep tissue necrosis or systemic infection carry a more guarded prognosis and may result in permanent scarring or scale loss. Prevention through proper husbandry is straightforward and far preferable to treating established disease, making scale rot an entirely avoidable condition in well-maintained captive reptiles.
