Respiratory infections caused by low temperatures represent one of the most common and preventable health problems in captive reptiles. Unlike mammals and birds, reptiles are ectothermic animals whose body temperature depends entirely on their environment. When environmental temperatures fall below the species-appropriate range, the reptile's immune system becomes severely compromised, making them highly susceptible to opportunistic respiratory pathogens that would normally be held in check by a properly functioning immune response.
This condition affects virtually all reptile species kept in captivity, though tropical and subtropical species are particularly vulnerable due to their higher thermal requirements. Bearded dragons, ball pythons, leopard geckos, chameleons, iguanas, and aquatic turtles are frequently diagnosed with temperature-related respiratory infections. The condition is especially prevalent during winter months when household temperatures drop, during power outages affecting heating equipment, or when keepers fail to provide adequate temperature gradients within enclosures.
The impact on reptile health can be devastating and often progresses rapidly once clinical signs become apparent. Because reptiles naturally hide signs of illness as a survival mechanism, respiratory infections are frequently advanced by the time owners notice symptoms. The combination of a suppressed immune system and active pathogen replication creates a dangerous cycle where the infection continues to worsen while the body's ability to fight it remains compromised. Without intervention, temperature-related respiratory infections commonly progress to pneumonia and can become fatal.
The encouraging news is that this condition is highly treatable when caught early and addressed comprehensively. Treatment success depends critically on correcting the underlying temperature problem while simultaneously providing appropriate medical care. With proper husbandry correction, supportive care, and veterinary treatment when needed, many reptiles make full recoveries. However, prevention through proper temperature management remains far superior to treatment, as respiratory infections can cause permanent lung damage even in survivors and predispose reptiles to recurrent infections throughout their lives.
