Unlike more localized eye infections, panophthalmitis involves a global inflammatory response that overwhelms the eye's natural defense mechanisms and causes irreversible damage to light-sensing and focusing structures.
This severe ocular condition can affect virtually any reptile species kept in captivity, though it is most commonly documented in popular pet species such as bearded dragons, leopard geckos, chameleons, turtles, and tortoises. The condition may arise as a primary infection following penetrating eye trauma, or it may develop secondarily when bacteria spread to the eye through the bloodstream during systemic infections.
