The enclosed subspectacular space has limited capacity to contain expanding infectious material, so pressure rapidly builds as the abscess develops. This pressure can damage the underlying cornea and internal eye structures, potentially causing permanent blindness even if the infection is successfully treated. Additionally, the infection can spread to adjacent tissues including the eye itself (panophthalmitis), the orbit, or systemically through the bloodstream. Visual impairment affects the reptile's ability to hunt and navigate, leading to secondary problems including malnutrition and injury.
With appropriate veterinary treatment including surgical drainage and antibiotic therapy, many cases of subspectacular abscess can be successfully resolved, though outcomes depend heavily on how early treatment is initiated. Fresh abscesses identified before significant pressure damage to the eye generally have good prognosis for resolution with preserved vision.
