Nannizziopsis infections represent a significant group of fungal diseases affecting reptiles, caused by various species within the genus Nannizziopsis and closely related organisms. These fungi were previously classified under Chrysosporium, and the disease caused by Nannizziopsis guarroi in bearded dragons was historically referred to as Chrysosporium anamorph of Nannizziopsis vriesii (CANV) infection or yellow fungus disease. Multiple Nannizziopsis species have been identified as reptile pathogens, including N. guarroi, N. vriesii, N. draconii, and others, with different species showing predilections for particular reptile hosts. These infections cause progressive, destructive skin disease that can spread to deeper tissues and, in severe cases, disseminate systemically.
Nannizziopsis infections affect a range of reptile species, with bearded dragons being particularly susceptible to infection with N. guarroi. Green iguanas, various other lizard species, and some chelonians have also been documented with Nannizziopsis infections. The prevalence of these infections appears to be increasing in captive reptile populations, possibly due to improved diagnostic capabilities, increased reptile keeping popularity, and conditions in captivity that may favor disease transmission. Among bearded dragons specifically, Nannizziopsis infection has become one of the most significant fungal diseases, causing substantial morbidity and mortality in affected collections.
The health impact of Nannizziopsis infection is substantial due to the progressive and destructive nature of the disease. These fungi cause dermatomycosis characterized by scale damage, tissue necrosis, and granulomatous inflammation that progressively destroys skin and can extend to underlying structures. Unlike some opportunistic fungi that require severe immune compromise to establish infection, Nannizziopsis species appear capable of infecting otherwise healthy reptiles, though stress and suboptimal husbandry increase susceptibility. The ectothermic physiology of reptiles means that environmental temperature affects both disease progression and immune response, making husbandry optimization an essential component of both prevention and treatment.
Nannizziopsis infections are treatable, particularly when diagnosed early before extensive tissue damage has occurred. However, treatment requires prolonged antifungal therapy, careful wound management, and optimization of environmental conditions. Importantly, Nannizziopsis can spread between reptiles, making isolation of affected individuals, quarantine protocols, and collection hygiene critical considerations. The progressive nature of untreated infection and potential for systemic spread underscore the importance of prompt veterinary evaluation for any reptile showing suspicious skin changes. Early intervention with appropriate therapy significantly improves prognosis compared to treatment initiated after extensive disease development.
