Hemipene impaction affects sexually mature male reptiles across numerous species, though certain groups appear more predisposed based on their anatomy and husbandry requirements. Snakes, particularly those kept in environments with inadequate humidity, frequently develop this condition. Lizard species including monitors, tegus, bearded dragons, and geckos are also susceptible. The condition may go unnoticed in its early stages because the impacted material is located internally, becoming apparent only when significant accumulation causes visible swelling or the animal shows behavioral changes.
The health impact of hemipene impaction extends beyond reproductive inconvenience. Accumulated debris creates pressure within the hemipene pocket, causing discomfort and potentially compromising blood flow to the tissue. The moist, warm environment of the impacted hemipene provides ideal conditions for bacterial growth, meaning that simple impaction can progress to infection or abscess formation. Chronic impaction may result in permanent damage to the hemipene tissue, affecting future reproductive capability. Additionally, the discomfort associated with impaction often leads to appetite reduction and stress-related immune suppression.

Treatment typically involves manual expression or removal of the impacted material under veterinary supervision, sometimes requiring sedation for patient comfort and safety.
