While dermatophytosis is more commonly associated with mammals and is familiar to most pet owners as ringworm, these fungi can also infect reptiles under appropriate conditions. Dermatophytosis can affect various reptile species, though it is less commonly diagnosed than in mammalian pets. Lizards, chelonians, and snakes may all potentially be affected. The condition tends to be associated with particular environmental circumstances, particularly excessive humidity, poor ventilation, and conditions that compromise skin integrity. Reptiles with pre-existing skin damage, retained shed, or concurrent illness may be more susceptible. The true prevalence of dermatophytosis in reptiles is not well established, and the condition may be underdiagnosed or confused with other skin disorders.
The health impact of dermatophytosis in reptiles is generally less severe than some other fungal infections such as Yellow Fungus Disease. Infections typically remain superficial, affecting the outer skin layers without deep tissue invasion in most cases. However, the condition causes discomfort, can predispose to secondary bacterial infections, and indicates underlying husbandry or health issues that require attention. Untreated infections may spread to involve larger skin areas and cause chronic skin problems. The zoonotic potential of dermatophyte fungi means that infection can potentially be transmitted to humans, making diagnosis and treatment important from a public health perspective as well.
