Blister disease, also known as vesicular dermatitis, is a bacterial skin infection characterized by the formation of fluid-filled vesicles or blisters beneath the scales of reptiles. This condition represents one of the more distinctive presentations of bacterial skin infection and is strongly associated with specific environmental conditions, particularly excessive humidity combined with poor sanitation. The appearance of fluid-filled blebs beneath scales is characteristic and differentiates this presentation from other forms of bacterial dermatitis that present primarily with scale discoloration and erosion.
Blister disease affects primarily snakes and lizards, with snakes being particularly commonly affected due to their extensive ventral contact with substrates. Among snakes, species maintained in conditions with inadequate attention to humidity control and substrate cleanliness are most frequently affected, regardless of whether they are naturally aquatic, semi-aquatic, or terrestrial species. Lizards with significant ventral surface area that maintains contact with substrates, such as bearded dragons, blue tongue skinks, and tegus, also commonly develop this condition. The prevalence of blister disease in captive reptile populations reflects the challenge many keepers face in maintaining appropriate humidity levels while ensuring adequate sanitation and ventilation.
The health impact of blister disease extends beyond the visible blisters to affect overall wellbeing and potentially systemic health. The blisters themselves contain serum and inflammatory cells and represent breaks in skin integrity that provide potential entry points for deeper infection. Ruptured blisters leave raw, ulcerated areas susceptible to secondary bacterial and fungal infection. Pain and discomfort from affected areas can cause reduced activity, appetite loss, and changes in normal behavior. If blisters become infected or if bacteria enter systemic circulation through damaged skin, septicemia can develop with potentially fatal consequences. The condition causes significant stress to affected animals, further compromising immune function and overall health.
Blister disease is treatable with combined husbandry correction and medical management, though successful resolution requires addressing the underlying environmental causes. Without correction of excessive humidity, poor sanitation, or other precipitating factors, medical treatment provides only temporary improvement before recurrence occurs. Early intervention when blisters are small and few offers the best prognosis. Advanced cases with extensive blistering, secondary infection, or systemic spread require more intensive treatment and carry more guarded prognoses.
