The causes of this developmental abnormality may include genetic factors, with some rabbit families potentially having higher incidence, as well as environmental factors affecting the pregnant doe such as nutritional deficiencies, toxin exposure, or illness during pregnancy. The impact of a VSD on a rabbit's health depends primarily on the defect's size. The abnormal blood flow through any VSD can potentially trigger secondary GI stasis if the rabbit becomes sufficiently compromised, adding another dimension to health concerns.

Surgical repair, while standard treatment for VSDs in humans and some animals, is not generally feasible in rabbits due to the specialized equipment, expertise, and inherent risks involved. Therefore, management focuses on medical support, lifestyle modifications, and careful monitoring.
