The impact of valvular disease on a rabbit depends on which valves are affected, the severity of dysfunction, and how long the condition has been present. Mild valvular disease may cause no noticeable symptoms and be discovered incidentally during routine examination when a heart murmur is detected. Moderate to severe disease causes progressive symptoms as the heart struggles to compensate for valvular inefficiency. Common effects include exercise intolerance, breathing difficulty, weakness, and fluid accumulation in the lungs or abdomen. As with any condition causing illness in rabbits, valvular disease can trigger secondary GI stasis due to stress, reduced activity, and appetite changes, adding another layer of health risk requiring attention.
With appropriate management, many rabbits with valvular disease can maintain good quality of life for extended periods, though the progressive nature of degenerative valve disease means that ongoing monitoring and treatment adjustments are typically necessary. Early detection through regular veterinary examinations allows intervention before significant cardiac damage occurs.
