Uveitis is inflammation of the uveal tract, the middle vascular layer of the eye that includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. In rabbits, uveitis is one of the more common serious ocular conditions encountered in veterinary practice, and it frequently has a direct connection to infection with Encephalitozoon cuniculi, a microsporidian parasite that affects a significant percentage of the domestic rabbit population. The condition can affect one or both eyes and ranges from mild inflammation that responds well to treatment to severe, vision-threatening disease requiring aggressive intervention.
The most common cause of uveitis in rabbits is E. cuniculi infection, a parasite that has a particular affinity for lens tissue. The organism can lie dormant for years before becoming active, often triggered by stress or immune suppression. When it affects the eye, E. cuniculi typically forms granulomas within the lens, causing a characteristic white mass that may eventually lead to lens rupture. However, uveitis in rabbits can also result from other infectious agents including Pasteurella multocida, from trauma to the eye, from immune-mediated processes, or from spread of infection from adjacent structures. Regardless of the underlying cause, the inflammatory process within the eye follows a similar pattern.
Uveitis significantly impacts a rabbit's health and quality of life through multiple mechanisms. The inflammation causes pain, which rabbits characteristically try to hide as a survival instinct. Untreated uveitis can lead to serious complications including synechiae formation, where the iris adheres to adjacent structures, secondary glaucoma from disrupted fluid drainage, cataract development, and permanent vision loss. The pain and stress associated with ocular disease can trigger secondary problems in rabbits, most concerning of which is gastrointestinal stasis, a potentially life-threatening condition where the gut stops moving normally.
Treatment of uveitis is generally successful when initiated promptly and pursued aggressively, though long-term management may be required. Early detection is crucial but challenging given rabbits' tendency to hide signs of illness, often until the condition has become advanced. Seeking care from a rabbit-savvy veterinarian is essential, as not all veterinary practitioners have expertise with rabbit ophthalmology. With appropriate anti-inflammatory therapy and treatment of any underlying cause such as E. cuniculi, many rabbits achieve good outcomes, though some degree of permanent changes to the affected eye is common in moderate to severe cases.
