Uterine polyps are abnormal growths that develop from the endometrial lining of the uterus in female rabbits. These growths consist of overgrowths of endometrial tissue that project into the uterine cavity, typically attached to the uterine wall by a stalk or broad base. While uterine polyps are generally considered benign growths, they represent a significant health concern in rabbits because they often indicate underlying uterine disease and can progress to or occur alongside more serious conditions including uterine adenocarcinoma. Uterine polyps are relatively common in intact female rabbits, particularly those over the age of two to three years, and their development is strongly associated with prolonged hormonal stimulation of the reproductive tract.
The development of uterine polyps is primarily driven by the hormonal environment in unspayed female rabbits. Continuous exposure to estrogen and progesterone throughout a rabbit's reproductive life stimulates the endometrial lining, leading to hyperplastic changes that can progress to polyp formation. This hormonal influence explains why uterine polyps are found almost exclusively in intact does and why spaying effectively prevents their development. The polyps themselves range in size from tiny nodules to larger masses that can significantly distort the uterine cavity and cause noticeable symptoms. Multiple polyps frequently develop within the same uterus, and they may be accompanied by other uterine abnormalities including endometrial hyperplasia and cystic changes.
The impact of uterine polyps on a rabbit's health depends on their size, number, and associated complications. Small polyps may cause no obvious symptoms and be discovered incidentally during veterinary examination or surgery. Larger polyps can cause intermittent vaginal bleeding, which may be the first sign noticed by owners. The presence of polyps indicates an unhealthy uterine environment that puts the rabbit at risk for more serious conditions. Because polyps share the same underlying cause as uterine adenocarcinoma, namely prolonged hormonal stimulation, rabbits with polyps are at increased risk of developing malignant uterine cancer. Additionally, any condition that causes decreased appetite or increased stress in rabbits can trigger secondary gastrointestinal stasis, a potentially life-threatening complication.
Treatment for uterine polyps is straightforward and highly effective: ovariohysterectomy, or spaying, removes both the polyps and the underlying hormonal cause of their development. When performed by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian experienced in exotic animal surgery, spaying provides a permanent cure and prevents future uterine disease. Because polyps often occur alongside or precede more serious uterine pathology, surgical removal allows histopathological examination to rule out concurrent cancer. The prognosis following spay surgery for uterine polyps is excellent, with most rabbits recovering fully and going on to live healthy, normal lives. This underscores the importance of early spaying as a preventive measure, eliminating the risk of polyps and other uterine diseases before they can develop.
