Tularemia is a severe and potentially fatal bacterial infection caused by the gram-negative bacterium Francisella tularensis. Often referred to as rabbit fever due to the high susceptibility of lagomorphs to this disease, tularemia represents one of the most serious infectious diseases that can affect domestic rabbits. The disease occurs throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, with the United States reporting cases in every state except Hawaii. Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas account for more than half of all reported cases nationwide. While tularemia is relatively rare in domestic pet rabbits compared to wild rabbit populations, it remains a critical concern due to its rapid progression and potential for transmission to humans.
The causative agent, Francisella tularensis, is an extremely infectious organism that can cause disease with exposure to as few as ten to fifty bacteria. The bacterium is transmitted primarily through the bites of infected ticks, deer flies, and other biting insects, though direct contact with infected animals, contaminated water, or inhalation of aerosolized particles can also lead to infection. Domestic rabbits are most commonly exposed through tick bites or contact with infected wild rabbits, rodents, or contaminated materials. Two main subspecies exist, with Type A being the more virulent form found predominantly in the United States, while Type B causes milder disease and is found throughout the Northern Hemisphere.
Tularemia has devastating effects on rabbit health, with infected rabbits often dying rapidly before owners notice any symptoms. As prey animals, rabbits naturally hide signs of illness, and the aggressive nature of tularemia means that by the time symptoms become apparent, the disease may already be at an advanced and often fatal stage. The infection can affect multiple organ systems simultaneously, causing fever, lethargy, enlarged lymph nodes, liver and spleen damage, and systemic sepsis. The rapid deterioration seen with this disease makes it particularly dangerous, and many rabbits are diagnosed postmortem rather than during their illness. Critically, tularemia is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from infected rabbits to humans and other animals, making it a significant public health concern.
When tularemia is diagnosed early and treatment begins immediately, survival is possible with aggressive antibiotic therapy and supportive care. However, the prognosis for rabbits with tularemia is generally guarded to poor due to the speed at which the disease progresses and the tendency of rabbits to hide their symptoms until the infection is overwhelming. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian with experience in exotic animal medicine is essential, as tularemia requires specialized knowledge of both the disease and rabbit-safe treatment protocols. Prevention focuses on minimizing exposure to ticks and avoiding contact with wild animals, making indoor housing a significant protective factor for pet rabbits.
