Ringworm causes circular areas of hair loss with crusty skin but is not restricted to mucocutaneous junctions. Urine scald affects the perineal area but presents as reddened, irritated skin from ammonia burns rather than discrete lesions.

Potential complications of untreated rabbit syphilis include secondary bacterial infection of open lesions, which can lead to abscess formation. Chronic untreated cases may develop scarring or deformity of affected tissue. In breeding rabbits, reproductive complications including decreased fertility, metritis, placenta retention, and neonatal mortality can occur. While extremely rare, persistence of bacteria in protected sites such as the claws can lead to treatment failure requiring more aggressive intervention. The most important potential complication to prevent is GI stasis, which can develop if a rabbit stops eating due to discomfort from facial lesions. This underscores the importance of monitoring food intake and seeking immediate care if a rabbit is not eating for more than twelve hours.
