Taenia cysticercosis, also known as Cysticercus pisiformis infection, is a parasitic condition in rabbits caused by the larval stage of the canine tapeworm Taenia pisiformis. This condition occurs when rabbits serve as intermediate hosts in the tapeworm's life cycle, with dogs, foxes, coyotes, and other canids acting as the definitive hosts where adult tapeworms reside. The infection has a worldwide distribution and can affect both domestic pet rabbits and wild rabbit populations, though it is more commonly seen in rabbits with outdoor access or those exposed to environments contaminated by canine feces.
The infection develops when rabbits ingest tapeworm eggs that have been shed in the feces of infected canids. These eggs contaminate vegetation, hay, grass, and other food sources that rabbits consume. Once ingested, the eggs hatch in the rabbit's intestinal tract, and the larvae migrate through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream, eventually reaching the liver where they develop into fluid-filled cysts called cysticerci. After several weeks of development in the liver tissue, the cysts typically migrate to the peritoneal cavity where they attach to various abdominal organs and structures.
The impact of cysticercosis on rabbit health varies considerably depending on the intensity of infection. Light to moderate infections often cause minimal clinical signs and may go undetected throughout the rabbit's life. However, heavy infections can lead to significant liver damage, hepatic fibrosis, and in severe cases, liver failure. The presence of numerous cysts in the abdominal cavity can also cause discomfort, reduced appetite, and secondary complications including gastrointestinal stasis. Rabbits with compromised immune systems or those experiencing stress may be more susceptible to severe disease manifestations.
Treatment for cysticercosis in rabbits is available and generally effective when administered appropriately by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian. Antiparasitic medications such as praziquantel and fenbendazole can eliminate the cysts, though multiple treatment courses may be necessary to achieve complete resolution. Early detection through routine veterinary examinations can improve outcomes significantly. Prevention focuses primarily on limiting rabbit exposure to environments contaminated with canine feces and ensuring that dogs sharing the household or environment are regularly dewormed. Indoor housing substantially reduces the risk of infection in pet rabbits.
