Staphylococcal infections in rabbits are caused by bacteria from the Staphylococcus genus, most commonly Staphylococcus aureus, though other species including Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus xylosus can also cause disease. These gram-positive bacteria are opportunistic pathogens that normally exist on the skin and mucous membranes of healthy rabbits without causing problems, but they can cause serious infections when they gain access to deeper tissues through wounds, abrasions, or compromised skin. Staphylococcal infections manifest in multiple forms in rabbits, including skin abscesses, pododermatitis (sore hocks), mastitis in nursing does, and occasionally systemic infections affecting multiple organs.
The bacteria typically enter the body through breaks in the skin barrier caused by injuries, bite wounds from cage mates or predators, abrasions from improper housing surfaces, or skin damage from urine or fecal soiling. Predisposing conditions that compromise skin integrity, such as moist dermatitis, parasitic skin conditions, or chronic irritation, increase the risk of staphylococcal invasion. Once the bacteria penetrate the skin surface, they multiply in the subcutaneous tissues and trigger an inflammatory response that leads to abscess formation. Unlike abscesses in many other species, rabbit abscesses contain thick, caseous pus that does not drain easily, making them particularly challenging to treat.
Staphylococcal infections significantly impact rabbit health and welfare through multiple mechanisms. Skin abscesses cause pain, interfere with normal movement and behaviors, and can become disfiguring if allowed to enlarge. Pododermatitis, one of the most common staphylococcal manifestations in pet rabbits, causes chronic pain in the feet and hocks that severely affects quality of life and mobility. Mastitis in nursing rabbits threatens both the mother's health and the survival of her kits. If not treated effectively, staphylococcal infections can spread systemically, causing septicemia that affects the heart, kidneys, and other vital organs. The chronic pain and stress associated with these infections can trigger secondary problems including GI stasis.
Treatment of staphylococcal infections requires intervention by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian who understands the unique challenges of treating this species. Because rabbit abscesses contain thick, paste-like pus rather than liquid, simple lancing and drainage is often insufficient. Complete surgical excision of abscesses or aggressive debridement combined with long-term antibiotic therapy is typically required. The choice of antibiotics must consider both effectiveness against Staphylococcus and safety for rabbits, as many commonly used antibiotics are dangerous for this species. With appropriate treatment, many staphylococcal infections can be resolved, though some cases require prolonged therapy and may recur. Prevention through proper husbandry, appropriate flooring, and prompt attention to skin injuries is essential for protecting rabbits from these infections.
