Spinal injuries in rabbits most commonly occur in the lumbar region of the lower back, where the powerful kicking motion of the hind legs generates tremendous forces against the vertebral column. The most frequent scenario involves a rabbit kicking out forcefully while being held, particularly if the hindquarters are not properly supported, causing hyperextension and fracture or luxation of lumbar vertebrae. Other causes include falls from height, being dropped, being stepped on, predator attacks, improper picking up technique, and rarely, pathological fractures through bone weakened by disease such as spondylosis or bone tumors. Spontaneous fractures can occur in rabbits with severe underlying bone disease.
The consequences of spinal cord injury vary dramatically depending on the location and severity of damage. Injuries high in the cervical spine can be immediately fatal due to disruption of breathing control. Thoracic injuries may cause paralysis of the hind limbs while preserving front limb function. Lumbar injuries, the most common type, typically cause hind limb paralysis, loss of bladder and bowel control, and loss of sensation in the hindquarters. The severity of cord damage ranges from mild bruising causing temporary weakness to complete transection causing permanent, irreversible paralysis. Initial assessment cannot always predict final outcome, as spinal cord swelling that resolves may permit recovery that initially seemed impossible.
Treatment and prognosis for spinal injury depend on injury severity, location, and whether any voluntary movement or sensation remains. Some rabbits with incomplete cord injuries recover significant function with appropriate treatment including anti-inflammatory medications, strict cage rest, and time for healing. Others have permanent paralysis that may still permit good quality of life with dedicated nursing care, including manual bladder expression, mobility assistance, and specialized housing. However, complete spinal cord transection carries a grave prognosis, and humane euthanasia is often the kindest option for rabbits with complete, irreversible paralysis.
