Sarcoptic mange in rabbits is a skin disease caused by the burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei, a microscopic parasite that tunnels into the outer layers of the skin to feed and reproduce. While this condition is well-recognized in many species including dogs, foxes, and humans, it is considered rare in domestic rabbits, with other mite species (particularly ear mites and fur mites) being far more common rabbit parasites. However, when sarcoptic mange does occur in rabbits, it causes severe, intensely itchy skin disease that requires prompt veterinary intervention. The condition is most frequently seen in wild rabbit populations and may occasionally spread to domestic rabbits through wildlife contact, making outdoor housing a significant risk factor.
Sarcoptic mange develops when female mites burrow into the superficial layers of the rabbit's skin to lay eggs. This burrowing activity and the mites' presence trigger intense allergic and inflammatory responses in the host. The life cycle is completed entirely on the host over approximately 17-21 days, with eggs hatching into larvae that mature through nymph stages before becoming egg-laying adults. The combination of physical skin damage from burrowing, allergic reaction to mite proteins, and secondary bacterial infection creates the characteristic severe skin changes associated with sarcoptic mange. Unlike some other mites, Sarcoptes cannot survive long off the host (typically less than 72 hours), but during this time can contaminate bedding and environments.
The impact of sarcoptic mange on rabbit health is significant and progressive. The condition causes intense, unrelenting itching that severely affects the rabbit's quality of life. Affected skin develops thick, crusted lesions that spread if untreated. Hair loss accompanies skin damage and may become extensive. The constant stress and discomfort can lead to reduced appetite, with the serious risk of secondary GI stasis that threatens all unwell rabbits. Secondary bacterial skin infections commonly complicate sarcoptic mange. In severe, untreated cases, the rabbit's overall health deteriorates progressively, potentially becoming life-threatening. Additionally, sarcoptic mange is zoonotic - it can temporarily infest humans in close contact with affected animals, causing itchy skin lesions.
Despite its severity, sarcoptic mange is treatable with appropriate antiparasitic medications prescribed by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian. Treatment typically involves multiple doses of medication spaced to cover the mite life cycle, along with supportive care for skin damage and any secondary infections. With prompt treatment, prognosis for recovery is good, though extensive skin damage may take considerable time to heal fully. The key to optimal outcomes is early recognition and treatment - the sooner intervention begins, the less extensive the damage and the faster the recovery. Because of its rarity in rabbits compared to other mite species, accurate diagnosis through veterinary examination and testing is essential to ensure appropriate treatment.
