RHDV2, also known as Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus Type 2 or new variant VHD, represents the more recently emerged and now globally dominant strain of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus. First identified in France in 2010, RHDV2 has since spread to nearly every continent and has displaced the classic RHDV1 strain in many regions. This highly lethal calicivirus causes acute fatal disease characterized by liver necrosis and disseminated intravascular coagulation, killing affected rabbits within hours to days of infection. A critical distinction from the classic RHDV1 strain is that RHDV2 can cause fatal disease in rabbits of all ages, including young kits that were previously protected from RHDV1. Additionally, RHDV2 has demonstrated ability to infect wild lagomorph species beyond domestic rabbits, including hares, jackrabbits, and cottontail rabbits, making it a significant concern for wildlife conservation.
RHDV2 arrived in the United States in 2018 with isolated cases in domestic rabbits, followed by a major outbreak beginning in March 2020 that affected both wild and domestic rabbits across the western states. Since then, RHDV2 has become endemic in the western United States, with cases reported in numerous states and ongoing spread. The virus has been detected in wild jackrabbits, cottontail rabbits, and feral domestic rabbits, establishing a wildlife reservoir that makes eradication essentially impossible. This endemic status means that all rabbit owners in affected regions and increasingly across the country must take preventive measures seriously. The Medgene RHDV2 vaccine received USDA emergency use authorization in 2021, providing domestic rabbits with effective protection against this devastating disease.
The impact of RHDV2 extends beyond pet rabbits to affect commercial rabbit operations, rescue organizations, wild rabbit populations, and species of conservation concern. Mortality rates in affected populations range from 40 to 80 percent in wild rabbits and may reach 100 percent in domestic rabbit facilities, devastating entire herds within days of disease introduction. The virus spreads through direct contact between rabbits, contaminated materials and environments, and mechanical vectors including insects. RHDV2 demonstrates exceptional environmental stability, surviving for months in dried biological material and contaminated surfaces, which contributes to its efficient spread and persistence. The broader host range of RHDV2 compared to RHDV1 has raised concerns for wild lagomorph populations including threatened species such as the pygmy rabbit.
There is no treatment for RHDV2 infection once clinical signs develop, making prevention through vaccination the only reliable protection. The Medgene vaccine available in the United States requires two doses administered 21 days apart for initial immunity, with annual boosters to maintain protection. Vaccination should be considered essential for all pet rabbits, particularly those in endemic areas or with any potential exposure to wild rabbits, outdoor environments, or other risk factors. Additionally, strict biosecurity measures including indoor housing, insect control, and careful hygiene practices reduce exposure risk. Rabbit owners should work closely with rabbit-savvy veterinarians to implement comprehensive prevention strategies that protect their rabbits from this serious threat.
