Rabbit Viral Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD), also known as Viral Hemorrhagic Disease (VHD) or Rabbit Calicivirus Disease (RCD), is one of the most devastating infectious diseases affecting domestic and wild rabbits worldwide. This highly contagious and frequently fatal viral illness is caused by a calicivirus belonging to the Lagovirus genus. The disease primarily targets the liver, causing acute hepatic necrosis and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), which leads to widespread hemorrhaging throughout the body. RHD affects rabbits of all breeds and ages, though susceptibility and mortality rates may vary depending on the specific viral strain involved. The disease has become endemic in many parts of the world and represents a significant threat to both pet rabbits and wild lagomorph populations.
Rabbit Viral Hemorrhagic Disease is caused by infection with rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV), a highly stable and resilient calicivirus. There are two main types of the virus: the classic RHDV (also called RHDV1), which was first identified in China in 1984, and the newer variant RHDV2, which emerged in France in 2010. The virus spreads through direct contact between infected and susceptible rabbits, as well as through indirect contact with contaminated materials including food, water, bedding, clothing, shoes, and equipment. Insects, rodents, and birds can serve as mechanical vectors, carrying the virus between locations. The virus is exceptionally hardy and can survive in the environment for extended periods, remaining infectious for three months or longer under favorable conditions.
The impact of Rabbit Viral Hemorrhagic Disease on affected rabbits is catastrophic. The virus causes massive liver destruction and triggers a cascade of clotting abnormalities that result in hemorrhaging from multiple organs and body orifices. Mortality rates in affected populations can reach 70 to 100 percent, with death often occurring within 12 to 36 hours of infection. In many cases, rabbits die so rapidly that owners may find their seemingly healthy pet suddenly deceased with blood around the nose or mouth. The disease is particularly devastating in multi-rabbit households, breeding facilities, and shelters where it can spread rapidly through an entire population. Beyond the immediate health impact, RHD poses a significant conservation concern for wild rabbit and hare populations in endemic areas.
There is currently no effective treatment for Rabbit Viral Hemorrhagic Disease once clinical signs develop. The disease progresses so rapidly that veterinary intervention is rarely possible before death occurs. However, vaccination provides effective protection against RHDV and is strongly recommended for all domestic rabbits, particularly in endemic areas. In the United States, RHDV2 has been considered endemic in the Western states since 2020, making vaccination increasingly important nationwide. The Medgene RHDV2 vaccine has received emergency use authorization from the USDA and requires two doses administered 21 days apart for initial immunity, followed by annual boosters.
