Pyelonephritis is a bacterial infection of the kidneys that represents one of the most serious urinary tract conditions affecting rabbits. This condition occurs when bacteria ascend from the lower urinary tract or spread through the bloodstream to infect the renal pelvis and kidney tissue itself. Unlike simple bladder infections, pyelonephritis involves the kidney parenchyma and can cause significant damage to these vital organs if not promptly diagnosed and treated. The infection can affect one or both kidneys and ranges in severity from acute, rapidly progressing illness to chronic, smoldering infection.
Pyelonephritis typically develops when bacteria, most commonly Escherichia coli, Pasteurella multocida, or Staphylococcus species, gain access to the kidney tissue. The most frequent route of infection is ascending from the bladder through the ureters, particularly when predisposing factors such as bladder sludge, urinary stasis, or anatomical abnormalities are present. Less commonly, bacteria may reach the kidneys through the bloodstream from infections elsewhere in the body. Female rabbits are more susceptible to ascending infections due to their shorter urethras, though male rabbits can also develop pyelonephritis.
The impact of pyelonephritis on affected rabbits can be profound and potentially life-threatening. Acute pyelonephritis causes systemic illness with fever, pain, and rapid deterioration if untreated. The infection can damage nephrons, the functional filtering units of the kidney, leading to decreased kidney function. If the condition becomes chronic or recurrent, progressive kidney damage may result in chronic kidney disease. Additionally, rabbits with pyelonephritis often stop eating due to pain and malaise, which can rapidly trigger gastrointestinal stasis, a secondary condition that can be fatal within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. This makes prompt veterinary attention absolutely essential.
With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, many rabbits with pyelonephritis can recover fully or manage the condition effectively. However, treatment success depends heavily on prompt recognition of symptoms and initiation of appropriate antibiotic therapy. Because rabbits hide illness instinctively as prey animals, the infection may be advanced by the time symptoms become obvious. Rabbit-savvy veterinary care is essential, as many common antibiotics are fatal to rabbits, and selecting appropriate, safe antibiotic therapy requires specific expertise. Regular monitoring during treatment and follow-up care help ensure complete resolution of the infection and minimize the risk of chronic kidney damage.
