Potential complications of polycystic kidney disease extend beyond direct kidney function impairment. Gastrointestinal stasis, always a risk in unwell rabbits, can develop secondary to the malaise and decreased appetite associated with kidney disease. This creates a dangerous cycle, as GI stasis further compromises the rabbit's ability to eat and maintain nutritional status. Hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease, may develop if the rabbit stops eating, as rabbits cannot tolerate fasting. Urinary tract infections may occur more readily in rabbits with compromised kidney function and can further accelerate renal decline. Monitoring for these complications and intervening promptly when they develop is essential for maintaining quality of life in affected rabbits.
