Non-functional tumors do not produce hormones but can still cause significant problems through physical mass effects as they grow and compress surrounding structures. The most common pituitary tumor type in animals is the adenoma, a benign tumor that nonetheless can cause serious problems due to its critical location. Carcinomas (malignant pituitary tumors) are possible but less common.
The impact of pituitary tumors on rabbit health can be profound and multifaceted. Neurological effects from mass compression may include vision problems as the tumor presses on the optic nerves, behavioral changes from brain compression, and potentially seizures. Hormonal imbalances affect metabolism, stress response, and multiple organ systems. As tumors grow, symptoms typically worsen progressively. Because pituitary tumors are often not suspected until symptoms are significant, diagnosis may be delayed. The subtle early symptoms combined with rabbits' natural tendency to hide illness means the condition may be quite advanced before owners recognize a problem.
Treatment options for pituitary tumors in rabbits are limited compared to those available for dogs and cats or humans. Surgical removal is technically challenging due to the tumor's location and is rarely performed in rabbits. Radiation therapy, when available, may slow tumor growth. Medical management focuses on treating symptoms and managing any hormonal imbalances. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian, ideally one with experience in oncology or neurology, should evaluate affected rabbits to determine the best approach for the individual case. Prognosis varies depending on tumor type, size, and whether hormonal or neurological complications have developed, but is generally guarded for significant pituitary tumors.
