Peripheral neuropathy in rabbits refers to damage or dysfunction of the peripheral nerves, which are the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord that transmit signals to and from the limbs, organs, and other parts of the body. Unlike central nervous system conditions that affect the brain or spinal cord, peripheral neuropathy specifically involves the network of nerves that extend throughout the body. This condition can affect sensory nerves that transmit sensations like touch and pain, motor nerves that control muscle movement, or autonomic nerves that regulate unconscious functions. Peripheral neuropathy is less commonly diagnosed in rabbits than in humans or dogs, partly because it is genuinely less common and partly because the subtle early signs are easily missed in prey animals that instinctively hide weakness.

Metabolic causes include conditions affecting blood sugar regulation, kidney disease, and nutritional deficiencies. Toxic neuropathy can result from exposure to heavy metals, certain plants, or inappropriately administered medications. Infectious agents including certain bacteria and parasites can damage peripheral nerves. Direct trauma to nerves from injuries, compressions, or surgical complications may cause localized neuropathy. Understanding the underlying cause is essential for appropriate treatment and determining prognosis.
The impact of peripheral neuropathy on affected rabbits depends on which nerves are involved and the severity of damage. Sensory nerve involvement may cause numbness, abnormal sensations, or pain, leading to self-trauma of affected areas or failure to protect limbs from injury. Motor nerve damage results in weakness, muscle wasting, and impaired mobility. When multiple limbs are affected, the rabbit may have significant difficulty with normal locomotion. Autonomic nerve involvement, while harder to detect, can affect gut motility, bladder function, and other internal processes. Because affected rabbits may not feel their limbs normally or may be unable to move normally, they are at risk for secondary injuries, pressure sores, and may stop eating due to discomfort or difficulty accessing food, leading to the ever-dangerous GI stasis.
Treatment success varies considerably depending on the underlying cause of the neuropathy. Some causes, such as certain toxic exposures when caught early or nutritional deficiencies, may be fully reversible with appropriate intervention. Others, such as severe traumatic nerve damage or advanced metabolic disease, may cause permanent deficits. Early diagnosis and treatment offer the best chance for recovery, but this is challenging in rabbits who instinctively mask symptoms of illness and weakness. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian is essential for proper evaluation and management, as peripheral neuropathy in rabbits is relatively uncommon and requires expertise in both neurology and rabbit-specific medicine to diagnose and treat effectively.
