This condition is caused primarily by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida, an organism that has evolved to persist within rabbit populations with remarkable success. The colloquial term snuffles derives from the characteristic snuffling and sneezing sounds made by affected rabbits attempting to breathe through congested nasal passages. While the upper respiratory tract serves as the most common site of clinical disease, pasteurellosis can affect virtually any organ system, making it a truly systemic concern rather than simply a respiratory problem.
The epidemiology of Pasteurella infection in rabbits presents challenges for disease management and eradication. Studies suggest that a significant proportion of domestic rabbits carry P. multocida asymptomatically, with colonization rates varying widely depending on population and testing methodology. The organism typically resides in the nasal passages, pharynx, and conjunctivae of carrier rabbits, causing no clinical signs until host defenses become compromised. Treatment of pasteurellosis requires commitment to extended antibiotic therapy with rabbit-safe medications, supportive care addressing immediate symptoms, and management of underlying factors that allowed clinical disease to develop. Many rabbits respond well to appropriate treatment, experiencing resolution of acute symptoms and return to normal quality of life. However, complete bacterial eradication proves elusive in most cases, with the organism persisting in protected sites and potentially causing recurrent disease when host defenses again become compromised. This characteristic pattern of apparent resolution followed by recurrence defines the management challenge of pasteurellosis in rabbits.
