Caused primarily by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida, this condition represents one of the most significant health challenges in rabbit medicine due to its extremely high carriage rate in domestic rabbit populations, estimated at fifty to ninety percent or higher depending on the source population. The term snuffles refers specifically to the characteristic snuffling, sneezing, and nasal discharge that typify upper respiratory infection, though pasteurellosis can affect virtually any organ system in the body. This ubiquitous bacterium colonizes the nasal passages and nasopharynx of infected rabbits, where it may persist asymptomatically for life or cause clinical disease when the host's immune defenses are compromised.
Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative coccobacillus that has evolved to be highly adapted to the rabbit host, establishing persistent colonization of mucosal surfaces, particularly in the upper respiratory tract. Transmission occurs through direct contact between rabbits, particularly nose-to-nose contact and mutual grooming, through respiratory aerosols during sneezing, and from mother rabbits to offspring during nursing and close care. The organism can also spread through contaminated objects and environments, though it survives only briefly outside the host. Once established in a rabbit colony or household, the bacterium is extremely difficult to eliminate and tends to persist in the population indefinitely. Stress, concurrent illness, environmental factors, and individual immune variation determine which colonized rabbits develop clinical disease.
The impact of pasteurellosis on rabbit health ranges from mild, self-limiting upper respiratory symptoms to severe, life-threatening systemic disease. Upper respiratory infection with sneezing and nasal discharge is the most common presentation, but the bacteria can spread to cause conjunctivitis, middle and inner ear infections leading to head tilt, abscesses in virtually any tissue, pneumonia, and septicemia. Chronic pasteurellosis causes ongoing suffering and reduced quality of life, with affected rabbits experiencing persistent symptoms, recurrent flares, and progressive complications. The condition's tendency to become chronic and its resistance to complete eradication make it particularly frustrating for both rabbit owners and veterinarians. Secondary complications, particularly GI stasis from reduced eating and stress, commonly accompany pasteurellosis and can be life-threatening.
Treatment of pasteurellosis involves antibiotic therapy combined with supportive care, but complete cure is often elusive due to the bacterium's ability to persist in tissues where antibiotics penetrate poorly, such as the sinuses, middle ear, and bone. Early intervention with appropriate antibiotics can control clinical symptoms and may achieve prolonged remission, but many rabbits remain chronically colonized and experience recurrent episodes throughout their lives. Working with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian is essential, as appropriate antibiotic selection, understanding of rabbit-specific disease characteristics, and comprehensive supportive care expertise are crucial for optimal outcomes.
