These tumors can be either benign or malignant, with various types including granulosa cell tumors, thecomas, luteomas, and adenocarcinomas occurring in rabbit populations. While ovarian tumors are less common than uterine adenocarcinoma in rabbits, they still represent an important reproductive health issue that rabbit owners should understand, particularly those who have chosen not to spay their female rabbits. The condition primarily affects intact female rabbits over three years of age, though tumors can develop at any point during a doe's reproductive life.
The development of ovarian tumors in rabbits is linked to the continuous hormonal cycling that intact females experience throughout their lives. Unlike many other mammals, rabbits are induced ovulators, meaning they do not have a regular estrous cycle with predictable hormonal fluctuations. Instead, their ovaries remain in a state of near-constant hormonal activity, which may contribute to cellular changes that can lead to tumor formation over time. Hormonal imbalances, genetic factors, and the cumulative effects of repeated hormonal stimulation of ovarian tissue all play potential roles in tumor development.
Ovarian tumors can significantly impact a rabbit's overall health and quality of life through multiple mechanisms. Hormone-producing tumors may cause behavioral changes, false pregnancies, and disruptions to normal reproductive function. As tumors grow, they can cause abdominal discomfort, interfere with normal digestive function, and potentially lead to secondary complications including gastrointestinal stasis, which is life-threatening in rabbits. Some ovarian tumors may also metastasize to other organs, particularly if they are malignant adenocarcinomas, making early detection and treatment essential for the best possible outcomes.
The good news is that ovarian tumors are highly treatable when caught early, with surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus (ovariohysterectomy) providing an excellent prognosis in most cases. However, because rabbits instinctively hide signs of illness as prey animals, ovarian tumors may not be detected until they have grown substantially or begun causing noticeable symptoms. This underscores the importance of regular veterinary examinations by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian who can perform thorough abdominal palpation and recommend appropriate diagnostic testing. Early spaying of female rabbits remains the most effective way to prevent ovarian tumors entirely, while also eliminating the risk of the much more common and deadly uterine adenocarcinoma.
