Commonly co-occurring conditions with nephritis reflect shared causes and the systemic nature of kidney disease. E. cuniculi infection often involves multiple organ systems, with brain involvement causing head tilt or ataxia and eye involvement causing cataracts, in addition to kidney disease. Dental disease frequently coexists with nephritis, both as a potential cause of bacterial seeding to the kidneys and as a concurrent problem in the same population of rabbits. Lower urinary tract disease including cystitis, bladder stones, and sludge may coexist with nephritis and can contribute to ascending infections. Chronic kidney disease may develop from or alongside nephritis, requiring concurrent management. GI stasis is a critical related condition that can develop secondary to the reduced appetite associated with kidney disease.

Conditions with similar symptoms to nephritis require differentiation during diagnosis. Kidney failure from other causes presents similarly and may result from nephritis or occur independently. Urinary tract infections confined to the bladder share some symptoms including blood in urine and urination changes. Uterine disease in intact females can cause systemic illness with some overlapping features. E. cuniculi with primarily neurological involvement may be confused with other causes of vestibular disease. Other infectious diseases can cause fever and malaise. Comprehensive diagnostic workup including imaging, blood work, urinalysis, and E. cuniculi testing distinguishes nephritis from conditions with similar presentations.

Potential complications of nephritis include progression to more serious conditions. Chronic kidney disease develops when nephritis causes permanent loss of nephrons, potentially progressing to kidney failure. Kidney abscess formation with bacterial infection creates severe localized disease requiring surgical intervention. Sepsis can develop from severe bacterial nephritis, causing life-threatening systemic infection. GI stasis from reduced appetite is a critical complication requiring prevention through nutritional support. Anemia develops with chronic kidney disease as erythropoietin production decreases. Hypertension commonly accompanies kidney disease. With E. cuniculi, progression to neurological involvement or cataract development may occur. Preventing complications requires appropriate treatment of the underlying cause, diligent supportive care, and close monitoring for signs of progression or new problems.
