In rabbits, meningitis is most commonly caused by bacterial infection, though other infectious agents and occasionally non-infectious causes can be responsible. Upper respiratory infections caused by bacteria such as Pasteurella multocida may spread to involve the central nervous system. Once bacteria or other pathogens reach the meninges, they trigger an intense inflammatory response that causes the characteristic symptoms and can damage the underlying brain tissue.
The impact of meningitis on affected rabbits is profound and multisystemic. The inflammatory process causes increased pressure within the skull, leading to severe headache and altered mentation. Fever, extreme lethargy, and loss of appetite are typical, and as with any condition that causes anorexia in rabbits, secondary gastrointestinal stasis rapidly becomes a complicating factor. Neurological signs vary depending on which areas of the brain and spinal cord are most affected but may include neck stiffness, altered consciousness, seizures, paralysis, and abnormal postures. Because rabbits instinctively hide illness, signs may not become apparent until the condition is already advanced, underscoring the importance of vigilant observation and immediate action when abnormalities are noticed.
Treatment of meningitis requires aggressive intervention with appropriate antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, and comprehensive supportive care, ideally initiated before definitive diagnosis is confirmed given the rapid progression of this condition. Finding a rabbit-savvy veterinarian is essential, as antibiotic selection must account for the unique sensitivities of rabbits, and anesthesia for any diagnostic procedures carries specific risks in this species. Early treatment significantly improves prognosis, though even with optimal care, outcomes vary depending on the causative organism, the extent of nervous system involvement, and how quickly therapy began. Survivors may have permanent neurological deficits requiring ongoing management and accommodations.
