Commonly co-occurring conditions with Malassezia dermatitis include bacterial skin infections, which frequently develop secondary to yeast overgrowth due to disruption of the skin barrier. Staphylococcal infections are particularly common concurrent findings. Any condition that predisposes to Malassezia may also predispose to bacterial dermatitis, and both may be present simultaneously requiring combined treatment. Underlying conditions that led to yeast overgrowth, such as dental disease, respiratory infections, or other systemic illness, are often present and require attention as part of comprehensive management. GI stasis can develop if discomfort from skin disease affects the rabbit's appetite, and this potentially life-threatening condition requires immediate intervention. Stress-related conditions may co-occur as the discomfort and treatment process can be stressful for affected rabbits.

Conditions with similar symptoms that must be differentiated from Malassezia dermatitis include dermatophytosis, which is the most common fungal skin disease in rabbits and causes hair loss and scaling similar to yeast infections. Dermatophyte infections are diagnosed through fungal culture and treated with different medications. Cheyletiella parasitovorax, the rabbit fur mite, causes walking dandruff with scaling that can resemble yeast dermatitis. Psoroptes cuniculi ear mites should be considered when ear margins are affected. Sarcoptic mange causes crusty skin lesions and hair loss. Bacterial dermatitis without yeast involvement can appear similar. Contact dermatitis from bedding or cage materials may cause localized skin inflammation. Sebaceous adenitis, though rare in rabbits, causes scaling and hair loss.

Potential complications of untreated or inadequately treated Malassezia dermatitis include spread of infection to larger areas of the body, development of secondary bacterial skin infections that may progress to deep tissue infections or abscesses, and chronic skin changes including thickening and scarring. If the condition causes sufficient discomfort to affect eating, GI stasis becomes a serious concern. Hepatic lipidosis can develop if rabbits do not eat adequately for extended periods. Chronic stress from ongoing skin disease can suppress immune function, creating a cycle of worsening health. Prevention of complications relies on early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and identification and management of underlying predisposing conditions.
