Intermittent Soft Cecotropes, commonly abbreviated as ISC, is a digestive condition in rabbits characterized by the periodic production of abnormally soft, malformed, or mushy cecotropes that differ from the normal grape-like clusters of healthy cecal pellets. Unlike consistent cecal dysbiosis or complete cecotrophy failure, ISC presents episodically, with rabbits producing normal cecotropes some of the time and abnormal ones at other times. This condition is extremely common in pet rabbits and is almost always related to dietary imbalances, particularly insufficient fiber intake and excessive carbohydrates. The intermittent nature of the condition often correlates with dietary variations or specific trigger foods in the rabbit's diet.
The underlying cause of ISC relates to disturbance in the delicate balance of the rabbit's hindgut fermentation system. The cecum, a large organ where fiber fermentation occurs, relies on a specific population of beneficial microorganisms to function properly. When diet provides insufficient fiber or excessive easily-digestible carbohydrates, the cecal environment changes in ways that disrupt normal cecotrope formation. The fermentation process that should produce firm, nutrient-dense cecotropes instead produces soft, poorly-formed material. Because dietary variation typically occurs intermittently, the resulting cecotrope abnormality is also intermittent, distinguishing ISC from more severe or persistent conditions.
The impact of ISC on rabbit health ranges from minor inconvenience to more significant concerns depending on severity and duration. Many rabbits with mild ISC show no obvious health effects aside from the occasional soft cecotropes in their enclosure, which create mess and odor but do not significantly affect the rabbit. However, persistent ISC may indicate more significant dietary problems that could eventually lead to more serious conditions including GI stasis. Rabbits who cannot consume malformed cecotropes may develop mild nutritional deficiencies over time. The cecotrope accumulation on fur creates hygiene issues and increases flystrike risk in warm weather. Additionally, the underlying dietary issues causing ISC often indicate broader nutritional problems that may affect long-term health.
Treatment of ISC is typically straightforward and highly effective, focusing on dietary correction rather than medication. The vast majority of ISC cases resolve completely with appropriate dietary modification, specifically increasing hay consumption while reducing pellets, treats, and other high-carbohydrate foods. Because rabbits instinctively hide signs of illness and ISC often presents as a relatively minor symptom, owners may not initially realize the importance of addressing the underlying dietary issues. However, dietary correction benefits overall health beyond just resolving ISC. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian can help diagnose ISC, rule out other conditions, and guide dietary adjustment. With appropriate intervention, prognosis is excellent, with most rabbits achieving complete resolution within weeks of dietary correction.
