This condition primarily affects the perineal area (around the genitals and anus), the inner thighs, hocks (ankles), and sometimes the ventral abdomen and feet. The term "hutch burn" originated from the observation that rabbits kept in poorly maintained hutches with wet, soiled bedding frequently developed this condition. Urine contains ammonia and other compounds that, when in contact with skin for extended periods, cause chemical burns, inflammation, and breakdown of the skin's protective barrier. This allows bacteria and fungi to invade, leading to secondary infections that compound the initial injury.
Hutch burn develops when a rabbit is unable to keep its rear end clean and dry, or when environmental conditions force the rabbit to sit in its own urine. Multiple factors can contribute to this situation. Unsanitary housing conditions where bedding is not changed frequently enough is a common cause. Medical conditions that increase urination, cause urinary incontinence, or prevent the rabbit from assuming normal urination postures contribute significantly. Obesity prevents rabbits from grooming their hindquarters effectively. Mobility issues from arthritis, spinal problems, or injury keep rabbits from moving away from soiled areas. Dental disease causing pain can reduce overall grooming behavior. Understanding the underlying cause is essential for successful treatment and prevention of recurrence.
The impact of hutch burn on a rabbit's quality of life is significant. The condition causes considerable pain and discomfort, which in turn leads to decreased appetite, reduced activity, and behavioral changes. Rabbits with hutch burn often stop eating normally due to pain and stress, putting them at risk for the life-threatening complication of GI stasis. The damaged skin is prone to secondary bacterial and fungal infections, which can become serious if untreated. In severe cases, the skin breakdown can extend to deeper tissues, leading to open sores, abscesses, or systemic infection. Fly strike (myiasis), where flies lay eggs in damaged tissue and resulting maggots feed on the rabbit's flesh, is a devastating complication that can occur rapidly in warm weather and is often fatal.
With appropriate treatment addressing both the skin damage and the underlying cause, hutch burn can be resolved and the rabbit can return to normal quality of life. Treatment requires a multi-faceted approach including wound care, pain management, antibiotics if infection is present, and environmental or medical management of contributing factors. Early intervention produces the best outcomes, as mild cases respond quickly to improved husbandry and topical care. Severe or chronic cases may require extended treatment and ongoing management.
