Hind limb paralysis and paresis represent some of the most serious mobility conditions affecting domestic rabbits, characterized by partial or complete loss of motor function in one or both back legs. Paralysis refers to complete loss of voluntary movement, while paresis indicates weakness or partial paralysis where some movement remains possible. These conditions can develop suddenly following trauma or progress gradually due to degenerative or infectious diseases. Hind limb paralysis is unfortunately relatively common in rabbits due to their unique spinal anatomy, powerful hind leg muscles, and susceptibility to certain infections that target the nervous system.
The causes of hind limb paralysis in rabbits are diverse and include spinal fractures or dislocations from improper handling or falls, intervertebral disc disease, spondylosis (spinal arthritis), infection with Encephalitozoon cuniculi (a microsporidian parasite), spinal abscesses, tumors compressing the spinal cord, and vascular events affecting spinal blood supply. Traumatic spinal injuries are particularly common because rabbits have relatively fragile spines compared to their powerful hindquarters, and they can fracture their own backs during panicked kicking if improperly restrained. The lumbar spine (lower back) is the most vulnerable area, and injuries here directly affect hind limb function.
The impact of hind limb paralysis on a rabbit's life is profound, affecting not only mobility but also the ability to groom, use the litter box normally, and maintain proper hygiene. Paralyzed rabbits are at significantly increased risk for urine scald, pressure sores, fly strike, and urinary tract infections. The psychological impact should not be underestimated either, as rabbits are prey animals that rely on their ability to flee from danger. Secondary complications including GI stasis commonly develop due to stress, reduced mobility, and pain. Without proper nursing care, paralyzed rabbits can deteriorate rapidly.
The treatability and prognosis for hind limb paralysis vary enormously depending on the underlying cause. Traumatic spinal fractures may be permanent, while paralysis from E. cuniculi infection or spinal inflammation may partially or fully resolve with aggressive treatment. Early intervention is absolutely critical, as delays in treatment can result in permanent nerve damage even in potentially reversible cases. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian with experience in neurological conditions is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment. Many paralyzed rabbits can live happy, comfortable lives with dedicated nursing care, appropriate modifications, and ongoing veterinary support, though owners must be prepared for the significant commitment involved.
