While not as commonly diagnosed as fatty liver disease, hepatitis is recognized as the second most frequent liver condition in rabbits and can range from mild, self-limiting inflammation to severe, life-threatening disease depending on the underlying cause. The term hepatitis is broad and encompasses liver inflammation resulting from various etiologies including bacterial infections, parasitic infections, viral diseases, toxic exposures, and trauma. Understanding that hepatitis is a description of liver pathology rather than a single disease helps rabbit owners appreciate why diagnosis of the underlying cause is essential for appropriate treatment.
Hepatitis in rabbits develops when inflammatory processes damage liver cells, impairing the organ's ability to perform its critical functions. The liver serves as the body's primary metabolic processing center, responsible for detoxification, protein synthesis, bile production, nutrient storage, and countless other biochemical processes. When inflammation disrupts these functions, the effects ripple throughout the entire body. Depending on the severity and duration of inflammation, affected rabbits may experience a range of consequences from mild malaise to complete liver failure. The liver has remarkable regenerative capacity and can recover from significant damage if the underlying cause is identified and addressed before permanent scarring occurs.
The causes of hepatitis in rabbits are diverse and require different treatment approaches. Bacterial hepatitis most commonly results from spread of Pasteurella multocida or other bacteria through the bloodstream to the liver. Parasitic hepatitis can be caused by Encephalitozoon cuniculi or hepatic coccidiosis from Eimeria stiedae. Toxic hepatitis results from exposure to harmful substances including certain plants, medications, or environmental toxins. Traumatic hepatitis occurs following physical injury to the abdomen. Each type of hepatitis has its own characteristics, prognosis, and treatment requirements, making accurate diagnosis essential. Some forms of hepatitis are highly treatable with appropriate therapy, while others may cause permanent damage or prove fatal despite intervention.
Early recognition of hepatitis is challenging because rabbits hide illness and liver disease often presents with nonspecific signs. Any rabbit showing decreased appetite, lethargy, or changes in behavior should be evaluated by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian who can perform appropriate diagnostic testing. Blood tests showing elevated liver enzymes suggest hepatic involvement, though additional testing is usually needed to determine the specific cause. With timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, many rabbits with hepatitis can recover fully, though some may require ongoing monitoring or management of chronic liver disease. Because untreated hepatitis can progress to liver failure or trigger secondary fatty liver disease from associated anorexia, prompt veterinary attention is essential.
