Rabbits have a relatively small total blood volume of approximately 55 to 65 milliliters per kilogram of body weight, meaning that a four-pound rabbit has only about 120 to 140 milliliters of total blood in their body. This small blood volume means that what appears to be a modest amount of blood loss can actually represent a life-threatening percentage of the rabbit's total circulating volume. Any bleeding that cannot be quickly controlled with simple pressure, or any internal bleeding, requires immediate emergency veterinary care.
The causes of severe hemorrhage in rabbits span traumatic injuries, surgical complications, reproductive emergencies, and systemic clotting disorders. Trauma from predator attacks, falls, crushing injuries, or accidents accounts for many hemorrhage emergencies, with outdoor rabbits and those with inadequate supervision facing highest risk. Reproductive emergencies including uterine cancer, pregnancy complications, and postpartum hemorrhage represent significant causes in intact female rabbits. Spontaneous hemorrhage without obvious trauma may indicate underlying clotting disorders, liver disease, or toxic ingestion. Regardless of cause, the physiological consequences of blood loss are the same, making rapid assessment and intervention essential.
The impact of hemorrhage on rabbit health depends on the volume and rate of blood loss, the location of bleeding, and how quickly treatment begins. Acute blood loss exceeding 15 to 20 percent of total blood volume causes signs of shock, while losses exceeding 30 to 40 percent are frequently fatal without transfusion. External hemorrhage allows visualization of blood loss, while internal bleeding may not be apparent until the rabbit shows signs of shock including weakness, pale membranes, rapid breathing, and collapse. The compensatory mechanisms that help other species cope with moderate blood loss are less robust in rabbits, whose small size and high metabolic rate make them particularly vulnerable to the effects of volume depletion.
Treatment of hemorrhage requires immediate action to control bleeding, restore circulating volume, and address the underlying cause. First aid measures including direct pressure can be lifesaving while transport to veterinary care is arranged. Emergency veterinary treatment includes intravenous fluid therapy, identification and control of the bleeding source, and potentially blood transfusion in severe cases. The prognosis depends heavily on the amount of blood lost before treatment, the ability to control the bleeding source, and the rabbit's overall health status. Prevention through safe housing, spaying to prevent reproductive emergencies, and avoiding injury situations provides the best approach to this life-threatening condition.
