Heat stress occurs when the environmental temperature, often combined with high humidity and inadequate ventilation, overwhelms the rabbit's cooling capacity. Rabbits evolved in temperate climates with access to cool underground burrows and are poorly adapted to hot conditions. Their thick fur coats, which provide excellent insulation against cold, become liabilities in warm weather by trapping heat close to the body. As body temperature rises, the cardiovascular system works harder to move blood to cooling surfaces, the respiratory rate increases dramatically to move air over moist respiratory passages, and metabolic processes begin to be affected by elevated temperatures. Gastrointestinal function is severely affected, with GI stasis commonly developing secondary to heat stress as blood is shunted away from the digestive tract. Even rabbits who survive severe heat stress may experience lasting organ damage, particularly kidney damage that may not become apparent until later.
Heat stress is entirely preventable with appropriate environmental management and is treatable if recognized and addressed quickly, but outcomes depend critically on the speed and appropriateness of intervention. Rabbits showing signs of heat stress require immediate cooling measures and may need emergency veterinary care depending on severity. Prevention through appropriate housing, temperature monitoring, and proactive cooling during warm weather is far preferable to treating heat emergencies. Understanding the seriousness of heat stress and the vulnerability of rabbits to hot conditions is essential for all rabbit owners, particularly those in warm climates or without air-conditioned living spaces.
