However, excessive or prolonged fur pulling from any cause can lead to skin irritation, wounds from repeated plucking, and secondary bacterial infections if the skin is damaged. Ingested fur can contribute to gastrointestinal issues including trichobezoars (hairballs), though rabbits normally pass ingested fur when their digestive system is functioning properly. The stress underlying behavioral fur pulling may have broader health implications, as chronic stress can suppress immune function and trigger potentially life-threatening gastrointestinal stasis. When one rabbit is pulling fur from another, the victim may experience significant stress and injury.
Management and treatment of fur pulling focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying cause. For pregnancy-related nesting, ensuring the doe has appropriate nesting materials and a safe kindling space allows the behavior to serve its natural purpose. For pseudopregnancy, spaying eliminates the hormonal trigger for this behavior and is generally recommended. For stress-related fur pulling, a thorough evaluation of the rabbit's environment, social situation, and physical health guides interventions aimed at reducing stressors and providing appropriate enrichment.
