Fur mites, caused by the ectoparasite Cheyletiella parasitovorax in rabbits, represent one of the most common external parasitic conditions affecting domestic rabbits. This condition, also known as "walking dandruff" due to the characteristic appearance of moving white flakes on the fur, causes skin irritation, flaking, and varying degrees of discomfort in affected rabbits. Cheyletiella mites are highly contagious between rabbits and can also temporarily infest humans and other animals in the household, causing itchy skin lesions. While fur mite infestation is generally not life-threatening, it causes significant discomfort and can lead to secondary complications if left untreated. The condition is particularly common in rabbits acquired from pet stores, shelters, breeding facilities, and any environment where multiple rabbits are housed together.
Cheyletiella mites are relatively large compared to other mite species and live on the skin surface rather than burrowing into it. They feed on keratin debris and tissue fluids, using specialized mouthparts to pierce the skin surface. The mites complete their entire life cycle on the host animal, with eggs attached to hair shafts and subsequent life stages occurring on the skin and in the fur. The life cycle from egg to adult takes approximately three weeks. Adult mites can survive off the host for up to ten days, making environmental contamination a significant concern for transmission and reinfection. The characteristic "walking dandruff" appearance results from the white or cream-colored mites moving through loose skin flakes on the rabbit's coat.
The impact of fur mite infestation on rabbit health ranges from mild irritation to significant discomfort depending on the severity of infestation and individual sensitivity. Affected rabbits experience itching that may range from occasional scratching to constant discomfort. Heavy infestations cause noticeable hair loss, widespread scaling, and skin inflammation. The chronic irritation can affect appetite and behavior, and in severe cases, the stress and discomfort may contribute to secondary complications including gastrointestinal stasis. Secondary bacterial skin infections can develop from skin damage caused by mites and scratching. Additionally, the zoonotic potential means affected rabbits pose a health risk to their human families, particularly causing itchy, papular skin rashes in people who handle infested animals.
Fur mite infestation is highly treatable with appropriate antiparasitic medications, and most rabbits achieve complete cure with proper treatment. However, treatment must address all potentially exposed animals and the environment to prevent reinfection. Early recognition and treatment minimize discomfort and prevent spread to other pets and family members. Any rabbit showing signs of skin problems, particularly excessive dandruff, hair loss, or itching, should receive veterinary evaluation by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian familiar with common parasitic conditions. Because many recently acquired rabbits harbor fur mites without showing obvious signs, quarantine and examination of new rabbits before introduction to established pets is recommended.
