Fur mites are common external parasites that affect domestic rabbits, causing skin irritation, dandruff-like scaling, and varying degrees of hair loss. The two most significant fur mite species in rabbits are Cheyletiella parasitovorax and Leporacarus gibbus (formerly called Listrophorus gibbus). Cheyletiella, often called "walking dandruff" due to the visible movement of large white mite colonies resembling moving dandruff flakes, is particularly notable and can also temporarily infest humans. Leporacarus gibbus, sometimes called the rabbit fur mite, lives primarily in the fur rather than on the skin surface and often causes minimal symptoms. Both species are common in rabbit populations, with many rabbits harboring subclinical infections that become apparent only when stress or immunosuppression allows mite populations to proliferate.
Fur mite infestations develop through direct contact with infected rabbits or contaminated environments. Cheyletiella mites live on the skin surface, feeding on skin debris and tissue fluids, and complete their entire 35-day life cycle on the host. Eggs are attached to hair shafts, and the mites can survive off the host for up to 10 days, allowing environmental transmission. Leporacarus gibbus lives attached to hair shafts in the fur coat and rarely contacts the skin surface, often causing minimal irritation. Transmission occurs through close contact, shared grooming tools, or contaminated bedding. Many rabbits carry low-level mite populations without showing symptoms, developing clinical signs only when their immune system is compromised or when populations grow due to inability to groom effectively.
The impact of fur mites on rabbit health varies from barely noticeable to significantly uncomfortable. Mild infestations may cause only subtle dandruff and occasional scratching. Moderate to severe Cheyletiella infestations cause visible scaling (the characteristic "dandruff" appearance), hair thinning or loss, and considerable itching that affects the rabbit's comfort and wellbeing. The constant irritation can lead to stress-induced complications including reduced appetite and potential GI stasis in sensitive individuals. Secondary bacterial skin infections may develop from scratching. In breeding operations or multi-rabbit households, mites spread rapidly between rabbits, potentially causing widespread infestation. Importantly, Cheyletiella is zoonotic and can cause temporary itchy rashes in humans who have close contact with infected rabbits.
Fur mites are highly treatable with appropriate antiparasitic medications prescribed by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian. Treatment typically involves topical or injectable medications repeated at intervals to kill mites through their life cycle stages. Environmental decontamination supports treatment success. Prognosis for complete resolution is excellent with appropriate treatment, though reinfection can occur from untreated contact animals or contaminated environments. Early detection and treatment prevent escalation to severe infestations, emphasizing the importance of regular coat inspection during grooming. Rabbit owners should be aware that skin scaling and itching warrant veterinary evaluation, as symptoms may indicate mites or other treatable conditions.
