This alarming condition can progress from initial signs to complete flaccidity within hours, causing significant distress to both the rabbit and owner. Despite its dramatic presentation, Floppy Rabbit Syndrome typically has a good prognosis with appropriate supportive care, with most affected rabbits recovering within two to seven days.
The exact cause of Floppy Rabbit Syndrome remains unknown, though it is suspected to be an autoimmune condition similar to Guillain-BarrΓ© syndrome in humans or Coonhound paralysis in dogs. These conditions involve the immune system attacking the peripheral nerves, resulting in ascending weakness and paralysis. Neurological findings in affected rabbits suggest a lower motor neuron condition with polyradiculoneuritis, which is inflammation of the nerve roots where they exit the spinal cord. Various theories about potential triggers have been proposed, including hypopotassemia, selenium deficiency, plant toxicity, and stress, but none have been definitively confirmed.
The impact of Floppy Rabbit Syndrome on affected rabbits is significant during the acute phase. Rabbits may be unable to support their weight on any or all limbs, leading to complete dependence on their caregivers for basic needs including positioning, feeding, and hygiene. The condition can affect the front legs, back legs, or both, and in severe cases may also affect the neck muscles. Secondary complications including gastrointestinal stasis, hypothermia, aspiration pneumonia, and pressure sores can develop if proper supportive care is not provided, making intensive nursing essential during the recovery period.
Despite its frightening presentation, owners should be encouraged that with dedicated supportive care, the majority of rabbits with Floppy Rabbit Syndrome make full or substantial recoveries. Immediate veterinary evaluation is essential to rule out other conditions that may present similarly, including spinal fractures, E. cuniculi infection, and toxin exposure. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian can provide appropriate diagnostic workup and guide the intensive supportive care required during recovery. Some rabbits experience only a single episode, while others may have recurrent episodes, often following periods of stress.
