This highly contagious condition occurs when microscopic mites take up residence in the rabbit's ear canal, feeding on skin debris, oils, and tissue fluids while causing significant irritation and inflammation. The infestation can affect rabbits of any age, breed, or sex, though it is particularly prevalent in rabbits housed in groups, those obtained from shelters or rescues, and animals kept in outdoor hutches where exposure to wild rabbits or contaminated environments is more likely.
The life cycle of Psoroptes cuniculi occurs entirely on the host rabbit, with mites completing their development from egg to adult in approximately three weeks. Female mites lay eggs on the skin surface within the ear canal, and these eggs hatch into larvae that progress through nymphal stages before reaching adulthood. The mites do not burrow into the skin like some other parasitic mites but instead live on the surface, where their feeding activity and the allergic reaction to their saliva and fecal matter cause the characteristic crusty, scabby lesions associated with the condition. Without treatment, mite populations can grow exponentially, leading to increasingly severe symptoms.
The impact of ear mite infestation on rabbit health extends beyond simple ear discomfort. Severe or prolonged infestations can lead to secondary bacterial infections, damage to the ear canal, and in extreme cases, rupture of the eardrum with subsequent middle or inner ear involvement. When the infection spreads to the inner ear, rabbits may develop vestibular disease with symptoms including head tilt, loss of balance, and circling behavior. Additionally, the intense itching and discomfort caused by ear mites can lead to self-trauma, stress, reduced appetite, and secondary complications including the potentially life-threatening gastrointestinal stasis that can develop when rabbits stop eating due to pain or distress.
Fortunately, ear mites in rabbits are highly treatable when caught early and addressed with appropriate antiparasitic medications. Treatment typically involves systemic medications such as ivermectin or selamectin, which effectively eliminate mites throughout their life cycle. Early detection and treatment generally result in complete resolution without lasting damage, though more advanced cases may require extended treatment and supportive care. As with all rabbit health conditions, prompt attention from a rabbit-savvy veterinarian is essential, as rabbits can deteriorate quickly when unwell, and what begins as a simple parasitic infestation can escalate to a serious health crisis if left untreated.
