Dermatophytosis, commonly known as ringworm, is a contagious fungal infection affecting the skin, hair, and occasionally claws of rabbits. Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm but by dermatophyte fungi, most commonly Trichophyton mentagrophytes in rabbits, though Microsporum canis and other species may also be responsible. This condition is significant not only for the discomfort it causes affected rabbits but also because it is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted to humans and other animals in the household. Ringworm is relatively common in rabbits, particularly in young animals, those with compromised immune systems, and rabbits housed in crowded or stressful conditions such as shelters, breeding facilities, or pet stores.
The fungal organisms responsible for dermatophytosis invade the outer layers of skin and hair shafts, feeding on keratin, the protein that makes up skin, hair, and nails. Infection occurs through direct contact with an infected animal or through exposure to fungal spores in the environment, where they can survive for extended periods on bedding, brushes, cage surfaces, and other objects. Once established, the fungi grow outward in a circular pattern, creating the characteristic ring-shaped lesions that give the condition its common name. The incubation period from exposure to visible symptoms typically ranges from one to four weeks, though some rabbits may carry the fungus without showing obvious signs.
The impact of dermatophytosis on rabbit health is generally moderate compared to many other conditions, but it should not be dismissed as merely cosmetic. Affected rabbits experience itching and discomfort that can lead to self-trauma from scratching. The skin damage from fungal infection and scratching can create entry points for secondary bacterial infections, which may become more serious than the original fungal problem. In severe or widespread cases, the discomfort may affect appetite and behavior, potentially contributing to stress-related complications including gastrointestinal stasis. Perhaps most significantly, the zoonotic potential means infected rabbits pose a health risk to their human families, with children, elderly individuals, and immunocompromised people being particularly susceptible to contracting the infection.
Dermatophytosis is treatable, and with appropriate antifungal therapy, most rabbits recover completely. However, treatment requires patience, as fungal infections respond more slowly than bacterial infections and may require weeks to months of treatment for complete resolution. Environmental decontamination is an essential component of treatment to prevent reinfection and spread to other animals or humans. Early recognition and treatment, ideally under the guidance of a rabbit-savvy veterinarian, lead to the best outcomes and minimize the duration of household infection risk. Because rabbits can carry dermatophytes without obvious symptoms, any new rabbit being introduced to a household should be quarantined and examined for signs of fungal infection before contact with established pets or extensive handling by family members.
