Demodex cuniculi is a species of demodectic mite that inhabits the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of rabbits. Demodectic mites are microscopic, cigar-shaped parasites that spend their entire life cycle within the skin structures of their host. Importantly, Demodex cuniculi infestation in rabbits is considered rare, and clinical demodicosis causing visible skin disease is even less commonly diagnosed. Research suggests that Demodex cuniculi may actually be a normal commensal inhabitant of rabbit skin, present in small numbers without causing disease in most individuals, similar to the relationship between Demodex canis and dogs.
The discovery and documentation of Demodex cuniculi dates back several decades, with early reports describing the mite in laboratory and pet rabbits. Unlike the relatively common demodicosis seen in dogs, clinical disease caused by Demodex in rabbits is exceptionally uncommon. When demodicosis does occur in rabbits, it is typically associated with underlying immunosuppression or other predisposing factors that allow normally controlled mite populations to proliferate beyond levels the immune system can manage. The rarity of this condition means that limited data exists regarding its true prevalence, typical presentation, and optimal treatment protocols.
The impact of Demodex cuniculi on affected rabbits, when clinical disease does occur, typically involves localized or generalized skin changes including scaling, hair loss, and sometimes secondary bacterial infection. The condition affects the hair follicles, and symptoms reflect follicular damage and inflammation. Because the mites are so small and live deep within follicles, they are not visible to the naked eye and require microscopic examination for detection. The clinical presentation may resemble other, more common skin conditions in rabbits, making accurate diagnosis important.
Demodicosis in rabbits is treatable when it occurs, though the rarity of the condition means treatment protocols are often extrapolated from those used in other species. The prognosis for localized disease is generally good, while generalized demodicosis may indicate underlying immune compromise that affects overall outcomes. Any rabbit suspected of having demodicosis should be evaluated by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian who can perform appropriate diagnostic testing and investigate possible underlying conditions. As with all rabbit health concerns, maintaining normal appetite is important to prevent the secondary complication of GI stasis.
