When this pumping mechanism fails or becomes overwhelmed, fluid accumulates within the stromal layers, separating the precisely arranged collagen fibers and disrupting the optical clarity that allows light to pass through unimpeded. Various conditions can impair endothelial function or increase fluid influx beyond the endothelium's pumping capacity.
Corneal edema in rabbits most commonly occurs secondary to other ocular conditions. Glaucoma, or elevated intraocular pressure, is a frequent cause, as increased pressure damages the corneal endothelium and forces fluid into the cornea. Uveitis, inflammation inside the eye, can both damage the endothelium and alter fluid dynamics within the eye. Trauma to the cornea or eye, infections, and even some medications can cause corneal edema. The treatability and prognosis of corneal edema depend entirely on identifying and successfully addressing the underlying cause. When the precipitating condition can be treated effectively, corneal edema often resolves as the endothelium recovers function.
