Cheyletiellosis, commonly known as walking dandruff, is a highly contagious parasitic skin condition in rabbits caused by the mite Cheyletiella parasitovorax. This condition is one of the most common ectoparasitic diseases affecting domestic rabbits worldwide. The mites are relatively large, visible to the naked eye as tiny white specks that appear to move across the fur and skin, giving rise to the distinctive walking dandruff appearance. Cheyletiella infestations can affect rabbits of any age, breed, or sex, though certain populations including young rabbits, long-haired breeds, and those in group housing situations are particularly susceptible.
Cheyletiella mites are non-burrowing surface parasites that live in the keratin layer of the skin and within the fur, feeding on skin debris and tissue fluids. The entire life cycle, which spans approximately three weeks, is completed on the host. Female mites lay eggs attached to hair shafts by fine silk-like threads. The eggs hatch into six-legged larvae, which molt through two eight-legged nymphal stages before becoming adults. While the mites spend most of their time on the host, they can survive in the environment for up to ten to twenty-one days, making environmental decontamination an important component of treatment.
The impact of Cheyletiella infestation on affected rabbits ranges from mild scaling with minimal discomfort to significant skin irritation, hair loss, and pruritus. The characteristic clinical sign is excessive dandruff or scale, particularly along the dorsum between the shoulder blades and over the hindquarters. This scaling gives the fur a powdery or mealy appearance. Some rabbits develop hypersensitivity reactions to mite antigens, resulting in more intense itching and skin inflammation. Importantly, Cheyletiella is a zoonotic parasite, meaning it can temporarily infest humans who handle affected rabbits, causing itchy skin lesions. This public health consideration makes prompt diagnosis and treatment essential.
Cheyletiellosis is readily treatable with appropriate antiparasitic medications, and the prognosis is excellent when treatment is initiated promptly and includes all in-contact animals and environmental decontamination. However, diagnosis can sometimes be challenging because mites may be difficult to find, especially in rabbits that groom excessively. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian experienced in exotic animal dermatology is best equipped to diagnose and treat this condition. As with any condition affecting rabbits, owners should monitor appetite closely, as any rabbit that stops eating is at risk for the serious complication of GI stasis.
