Sarcoptic mange caused by Sarcoptes scabiei produces crusty skin lesions, typically affecting the face, ears, and extremities with intense pruritus. Psoroptic ear mites cause crusty lesions in the ears that may spread to adjacent head and neck areas. Fur mite infestation with Leporacarus gibbus can cause similar scaling but is less commonly diagnosed. Sebaceous adenitis causes scaling and poor coat quality. Nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and contact dermatitis may also cause coat and skin changes that could be confused with cheyletiellosis.

Potential complications of cheyletiellosis include spread to larger areas of the body if untreated, development of hypersensitivity reactions with intensifying pruritus, secondary bacterial skin infections, and transmission to other household pets and humans. Human family members in contact with affected rabbits may develop itchy papular skin lesions. If the rabbit's comfort and stress levels are significantly affected, appetite may decrease, risking the development of GI stasis. Prevention of complications relies on early diagnosis, appropriate treatment of the rabbit and all in-contact animals, thorough environmental decontamination, and monitoring for any systemic effects on the rabbit's health.
