Cardiac arrest in rabbits is the sudden cessation of effective heart function, representing the most immediately life-threatening emergency possible. When the heart stops beating or beats so ineffectively that blood circulation ceases, death follows within minutes unless immediate intervention restores cardiac function. Cardiac arrest can occur as the terminal event in various disease processes, as a complication of anesthesia, as a result of severe stress, or apparently spontaneously in rabbits with underlying heart conditions that may not have been previously diagnosed. The unique sensitivity of rabbits to stress, combined with the prevalence of often-undetected cardiac disease in the species, makes cardiac arrest a significant concern for rabbit owners and veterinarians.

The impact of cardiac arrest is obviously catastrophic, as without intervention death is certain within minutes. Even with immediate resuscitation efforts, survival rates are low, and successful resuscitation may be followed by neurological damage from the period without oxygen delivery to the brain. The rapid progression from arrest to death leaves virtually no time for deliberation or transport to veterinary care. Understanding the signs of impending cardiac compromise and taking action to prevent arrest is far more effective than attempting resuscitation after the heart has stopped. For rabbits that survive a cardiac event, the underlying cause must be identified and addressed to prevent recurrence, though in many cases the condition that led to arrest is not survivable.
Treatment of cardiac arrest consists of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, commonly known as CPR, combined with advanced life support measures when available. The effectiveness of resuscitation in rabbits is limited, and outcomes are often poor even with optimal intervention. Prevention through identification and management of cardiac disease, reduction of stress, and careful attention to anesthetic safety offers the best approach to reducing cardiac arrest deaths. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian can screen for cardiac disease and help owners understand and mitigate risk factors. Despite these precautions, some cardiac arrests occur without warning, and rabbit owners should be aware that sudden death can occur even in apparently healthy rabbits.
